Developing an IT Strategic Plan

There key components of an IT strategic plan are very similar to a business strategic plan. It is import to plan for current and future IT needs while maintaining a balanced budget.


IT strategic plans address needs, wants, and desires for the next 3-5 years in alignment with the business strategic plan.  Accordingto CIO.com there are six components.

  1. Executive Summary
  2. Scope
  3. Business Context
  4. IT Principles
  5. Metrics
  6. Review

Many businesses assume an IT strategic plan is a very large document that is full of IT jargon and boring technical descriptions.  There may be some of this in your IT strategic plan, but it should really be the road map for you IT.  IT is a facilitator to enhance your business.  Your plan should include a budget for each item and an assessment annually to track progress.
