The Cost of Outages

It is hard to explain how important BC/DR is for a company. Unfortunately, most people learn the hard way after they experience an outage. There are so many horror stories about outages. Microsoft and Google both had outages last week. Lost sales are one of the biggest issues with outages. On Monday, Amazon has a 15 minute outage and it is estimated that it costs $2.5 to 4 million in lost sales.  Last year a 49 minute outage cost a company $5 million. The key is to be proactive rather than reactive.

One step toward BC/DR is virtualizing your environment and migrating to a private cloud service. It is important to select a service that provides backups and BC/DR as part of their services. Uptime is key for businesses. Avoid the pain of lost revenue due to outages.

Key questions include: how will you communicate with customers and employees if your network is down? What is your uptime? Do you offer private cloud services? How so can we be up if the data center has an outage? Is the data center fully redundant? What is the security?
